Biology is pursued intensively right from the Lower School to the Upper School. Theory and practical lessons are integrated to enliven the classroom scenario and make it more meaningful. Technology is used for conceptual clarity of topics being transacted in the class. Biology cannot be confined only to classrooms hence, field trips are undertaken to enhance the learning process and enlighten students about nature. Trips are organized to various institutions to expose the students to modern techniques of biology and seminars and talks are organized to inform them about the career prospects in Biology.

Biology Laboratories:

The Assam Valley School has two well equipped and fully furnished laboratories catering to the needs of the syllabus. A wide variety of plant and animal specimens are on display in the laboratories and are used for transaction in the class. The lab also has all the charts and models covering all aspects of Biology which are used as teaching aids during the classroom transaction.





Mrs. Joyce MacDonald (Chair)

Education: M.Sc (Botany) M.Phil (Seed Technology) B.Ed.

She is a passionate educator with over 10 years of teaching. She has the experience of teaching in State Board, CBSE and CISCE schools. She has worked as the career counsellor giving academic and college guidance to students of the Upper School. She is an ardent reader and is passionate about gardening. She is committed to make quality education fun and easy for her students. She believes in creating strong foundations for her students not just in academics but also creating a holistic approach to child development .





Mrs. Debajani Sharma Borah (Teacher, Head of Social Service League)

Education: B.Sc (Zoology), B.Ed.

With experience of over 10 years in teaching, including House Mistress-ship, she has the advantage of having taught different curriculum like SEBA and ICSE. She is also heading the Social Service League and is associated with Social Service Programmes for more than 12 years. She was also associated with the Junior Red Cross Society. She has a strong presence in the classroom and inspires the students to learn from the heart .





Ms. Lipika Barah (Teacher)

Education: M. Sc (Botany), M.Sc. (Ecology & Environment), B. Ed.

She is a goal oriented professional with nearly 10 years of rich experience in Teaching, pastoral care, Student & School Management mostly in residential schools. She has the experience of teaching in CBSE and ICSE schools. She is a National Trainer of International Award for Young People (IAYP). She is dedicated and self motivated professional with proficiency in organizing International student exchange programme and also can maintain school and community relationship. She is skilled at bringing challenging & innovative teaching/learning atmosphere which empowers the active learner.

Her motto is, “Never leave till tomorrow, which you can do today”- Benjamin Franklin.





Mrs. Meenakshi Baruah Das (Teacher, ISC Advisor for First Form, Coordinator of Science, Faculty Advisor for Science (Careers Unit) )

Education: M.Sc. B.Ed (Gauhati University)

Mrs. Baruah Das is a dedicated teacher who has over 12 years of experience. She has been teaching Biology and Biotechnology since the last 8 years at AVS. She is passionate about the subject and inspires the students to learn the subject.





Dr. (Mrs.) Hemashree Deka (Chair – Environmental Education and Upper School Biology Teacher)

Education: M.Sc. Agriculture (Horticulture)-Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat and PhD in Biotechnology on Bioprospecting of Medicinal Plants of Lamiaceae family,Gauhati University

Dr. Mrs. Deka has worked at The Defence Research laboratory (DRDO) and has been working at The Assam Valley School for last 8 years as Chair of Dept of Environmental Education, presently apart from Environmental Science also teaching Biology in the Upper School.
