DEPARTMENT OF ENVIONMENTAL EDUCATION

 

The Dept of Environmental Education was established at AVS in 2005, when the subject was introduced across the board by the Council. The department has delivered fantastic board results, best in the country every year. The department have been involved in various environmental activities and creating awareness about different environmental issue. The department has purchased a paper recycling unit and making recycle paper and products out of it. An agro shed with a pilot project on organic farming has also been initiated. We have also received ‘Green School award’ and British Council’s ‘Grand Banyan’ award last year.

Dr. Hemashree Deka (Chair)

MSc. Agriculture (Horticulture)-Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat and PhD in Biotechnology on Bioprospecting of Medicinal Plants of Lamiaceae family,Gauhati University, worked at Defence Research Research laboratory (DRDO) and has been working at The Assam Valley School for last 8 years as Chair of Dept of Environmental Education, presently apart from Environmental Science also teaching Biology in Classes 9 & 10.

She had been conducting the ‘Environmental Initiatives at AVS’ as Senior Activity Programme and led the various audits of the environment and received the 8th position in the Green School Award. She has introduced paper recycling, organic farming, rain water harvesting etc in school. She is the co-coordinator of the British Council’s International School Award (ISA) programme for AVS and has successfully coordinated the collaborative projects with Dr. K Singh, to get the accreditation for the School for 3years.

She has also successfully coordinated many other British Council programmes like the Grand Banyan Award, Global Young Citizen Summit and Club and presently undergoing Global Teacher Accreditation programme.

 

 

 

Mr. Abhinav Gogoi(Teacher/Counselor)

COUNSELOR PROFILE Inter-disciplinarity, internationalism and “Education without Prejudice” are values he strictly adheres to. He is an IB graduate from Mahindra United World College of India, and has completed his higher studies in Jacobs University Bremen and University Bremen (Germany) in Marine Geosciences and Climate Research. He has penchant for traveling and after having done so extensively, he realized his desire to start giving back to the communities that has structured his holistic growth – hence, his interest in teaching (Geography and Environmental Sciences) at his alma mater, the Assam Valley School. He is also working to develop the Careers Department, to bring an international perspective to AVS and help students go abroad for better education..

 

 

 

Mrs. Indra Rao Mahanta (Teacher)

BA(Geog), B.Ed(Guwahati University), Diploma in Environmental Education(IGNOU), Presuing M.Ed (Guwahati University), Praveen in Hindi (Ministry of Human Resource Development, Persuing 3rd year in Sattriya dance (Board of Satra Mahasabha).

Prior to joining AVS as a teacher, Mrs. Mahanta worked as Principal of KIDZEE, Tezpur for one year. She has 6 years of teaching experience.
