About School

The Assam Valley School is to be found amongst the wonderful green gardens of Harchurah Tea Estate. Opened in 1995, it has already made its mark in terms of creativity, dynamic and forward-looking pedagogy, and belief in the holistic development of children. The dream of its Founders was to bring to the North-East of India an institution which combined the operation of a public school with best practice in India and overseas. The seeds of this vision grew from the history of tea and the legend of the Williamson Magor group. Mr and Mrs B M Khaitan and Mr and Mrs R B Magor planned the conversion of dream into reality.

Along with reinforcing the School’s core values of integrity, resilience, pursuit of excellence, and respect, The Assam Valley School strongly believes in education being the greatest adventure in a child’s life. Each classroom is a platform of innovative teaching and learning methodology where the teachers aim to be facilitators and to nurture a child’s natural curiosity to take shape and flourish. The School promotes education beyond the classroom with over thirty co-curricular activities to select from. Our ‘school for adventure’ seeks to excel in its cultural life with students winning laurels in National and International competitions in various activities such as Dance, Music, Art, Debating and Model United Nations. In the lovely grounds of the School, the Sports Department supervises over 17 disciplines, each one with a dedicated coach and a devoted set of students, producing sportspersons par excellence. The quality of these programmes is underlined by the fact that many students go on to pursue the passion they have discovered while being involved in them, turning the skills which they have learned into professional career choices. AVS ensures that a student receives not just education here, but discovers a way of life.

It is hard to find words which can suitably describe the beauty of the AVS campus. Generations of Aviators have aspired to capture in art and photographs the bright morning sky, the luminous afternoon sun, and the shimmer of the night that seems to dazzle even the most trained eye. Between the pages of books borrowed from the exhaustive library, to the shout of laughter echoing from ‘By the Way’, the School’s cafeteria – a favourite haunt of teachers and students alike, to the bonds woven on the corridors that survive the wear and tear of friendships, lies the spirit of AVS. In the determination to live life with a sense of adventure and the gratitude of sharing thrives the true nature of each girl and each boy who wears with pride the designation of being an Aviator.

AVS has been ranked number one amongst schools in infrastructure, but this valuable achievement is at the heart of the life of the School community which seeks every day to keep the 240 acres that we call home ‘green’, as much in character as in colour. AVS has recently secured the No. 2 position among the best Co-Educational Boarding Schools in India and has claimed the top spot in the state of Assam. What the School prides itself in more, however, are the achievements of its students and the alumni who have gone on to win accolades in national and international forums. The measure of AVS’s achievement can be see in the quality of the students who pass through its gates and establish themselves with confidence in the world beyond school.

As the years pass, the words of a Founder, Mr. B.M. Khaitan, rings firmly in the mind of every Aviator: “A good School will produce a good student, and a good student will produce a good citizen, and a good citizen will produce a good country”. This remains the ethos of The Assam Valley School.
